Content of the study

The German construction and construction supply industry is facing perhaps the most tremendous upheavals in its history. While value creation, distribution channels and processes have hardly changed in the last 100 years, several trends are now leading to a transformation pressure that comes close to a slowed asteroid impact in the industry. Labour shortages, climate change and the digitalisation of the building envelope are not new developments, but they will come to full fruition with their effects in the 2020s. We at S&B Strategy have therefore asked ourselves what exactly the effects of these upheavals will be and which segments of the construction and construction supply industry will be affected by them and how.

In this study, we have therefore examined the top trends for their quantifiable effects, interviewed over 500 top decision-makers in the German construction industry about the current challenges, fields of action and priorities and analysed their statements.

As a result, we assume a significant consolidation of the German construction industry, which will have a strong impact on the required capabilities in the value chain. Converging trades, digital products and services as well as new technologies will shape the industry in the coming years and require companies to rethink.

The success factors in this time of transformation are the focus on the changing needs of users and adapted product and service capabilities derived from this, which must be developed through clear strategic measures and M&A activities. The German construction and construction supply industry is facing an exciting challenge.
