Content of the study

The challenges facing small and medium-sized craft businesses today will become significantly more acute in the coming years. This is the result of the Zukunft Handwerk study. In particular, demographic change and the associated shortage of skilled labour, the increasing complexity of construction projects and unresolved succession situations represent the key challenges. S&B Strategy forecasts increasing market consolidation and a steadily growing gap between supply and demand by 2030.

‘The energy crisis and climate targets are causing the demand for tradespeople to continue to explode, but who is actually going to meet this demand?’ is one question asked by a managing director of a trades business interviewed in the study. As part of the survey, qualitative interviews were conducted with more than 150 owners of craft businesses of different sizes. Secondary data and discussions with industry experts were also used. Based on the findings, S&B Strategy developed specific recommendations for action to effectively meet these challenges.
