Content of the study
The current COVID-19 crisis is presenting many companies with major challenges through no fault of their own, which are accompanied by enormous losses in turnover and earnings. What path do affected companies need to take to successfully overcome this crisis? In this study, S&B Strategy analysed 3,287 companies in the German construction industry and identified those players that have managed to return to the top of their industry in terms of sales and earnings after a crisis.
The aim of the study was to identify the success factors for successfully repositioning one's own business model and achieving a ‘sales turnaround’ while maintaining stable earnings. The S&B Strategy team identified the patterns of action that ‘comeback champions’ in the German construction industry have used to achieve a comeback in terms of sales and earnings following negative external effects (e.g. slumps in sales markets, fluctuations in raw material prices, new customer requirements, etc.) by adapting their strategic objectives and the resulting skills architecture.
It is clear that, in addition to a clear positioning and the resulting market development and service offerings, these companies demonstrate one thing above all else: Data-based work, rigour and perseverance.
